When I delve back into my memories, and think about my history of pretzles I immediately think of my Grade 7 self grabbing some at the mall after school with all my bus buddies. We were just excited to be taking public transportation, and that 5 dollars could get us a snack and a little ‘adult’ freedom before arriving back home. Once in a while, I’ll grab a pretzel at the Bell Center or the movie theatre but they lack the spark and freshness of those of my childhood days. Plus living in Montreal, if anyone wants a doughey treat, everyone reaches for a fresh bagel but pretzels are making a comeback (can we call it that?) or a fresh new start here in the city. But now there is La Pretzelleria in the Plateau, newly opened by a Romanian couple is changing the pace and you can grab one of these instead of the city’s famous bagels.
At only 2 dollars a pretzel, the snack is affordable and quick. My number one tip from being 13, is to get a plain or salt coverred pretzel and dip it in Marinara sauce – cannot go wrong trust me. Here there is a whole host of selection – Sesame, Poppy Seeds, Cumin, Nescafe Espresso ( I was a little shocked at this one), Olive, Salt, Hotdog pretzel, Cheese pretzel and more. Open from 11 am, the joint could serve as a quick lunch place perfect for summer that soon will be starting. The set up inside is basic: kitchen to prepare food, counter to serve people and some stools for a quick bite with some condiments for your pretzel.
Usually Sesame and Salt are my favorites, plain and simple cannot be competed against. Our number one tip for a delectable pretzel is that it needs to piping hot out of the oven. Then it will be soft in the middle, slightly crunchy on the outside and absolutely perfect. We say this because once cold there is almost no point, sort of like buying a bagel from Fairmount or St.Viateur – all at their prime when they come right out of the oven and still hot. The longer they are outside milling about they get tough, i.e. no longer as delicious. The other pretzels like cheese and hot dog are just as good, just make sure they are warm and top them with the appropriate condiments and enjoy!
